Now for today's way to enter:
Tell me what your biggest complaint is about the human race and what book you've read in your lifetime that put things in perspective for you.

If you have a book to pitch, do that in part two of your comment. If not, just let your word-soaked brain go nuts on part one!

Well, that's all for today, folks! Until next time, WRITE ON!

Jo

  1. Yay oh my gosh I'm so excited! As for biggest complaint about the human race... right now it's probably not fact-checking on social networking lol. I just wrote a long blog about spreading hate memes with paranoid accusations without fact checking. I WISH there was a book that put that into perspective that I've read so far. I suppose if I stretched it, I could say theology books by Bart Ehrman (which I used a lot while I was in college) sort of drew attention to distorted facts regarding theology, without attacking religion as a whole. Good stuff, I highly recommend it if you're interested in that sort of thing. Non- fiction but not dry at all!

    1. LOL! Congratulations! :) I don't like folks that hate, period. There's no place for public smashing. If someone makes you angry, let it go and keep it to yourself, right? My Mythology prof had a doctorate in Theology. Talk about an interesting class :) haha Thanks for sharing, Angella!

  2. Just stopping by (I already read the fabulous Lily), but I'm loving the indie books you're promoting. I'm curious to see your recommendations and check a few out =)

  3. Congratulations Angella!
As for my biggest complaint...narcissism. We have become a "me first", "look at me", "but wait, what about me?" society. And I mean globally. Social media is only part of this. Reality television contributes to it too. I'm not sure of a book that addressed this appropriately, except for maybe Diary of A Wimpy Kid. :-) The Hunger Games hits part of it. That said, here's more about ME and MY book SEDITION. It's an atypical political thriller. When is the last time you read a political novel that references digital art and scultpure? You can read more about it at http://seditionbook.com, where you can download and print documents referenced in the book, see the artwork mentuioned, and find out more about ME. Thanks for the opportunity.

    1. Your book is VERY well written, Tom! It's moved to my short list already. :) Thanks for popping by and playing along. I agree about the narcissism. I saw something today that said Facebook needs a "who cares" button. I agree. LOL!

  4. I think my biggest complaint about the human race is indifference. I strongly believe that if you're able to help another person out, that you should. Nothing gets under my skin more than people who say 'It's not my problem'. I think The Hunger Games was a pretty good depiction of that kind of society where people just allow things to happen to themselves and others instead of taking a stand... until they did.

My debut novel, DISSIDENCE, also centers around that kind of a society. Snarky, sarcastic, sixteen-year-old Kaleigh, however, isn't one to follow blindly. She also isn't one to keep her opinions to herself. Unfortunately, it doesn't take long for her to find out what having a big mouth and not enough brains to keep it shut can earn you. A one-way ticket to the work camps no one even knows exists.
Nuclear war has ravished the nation, and a century later, the survivors are living in an entirely new world. In a society where everything is decided for you, form where you work to who you marry, dissidence is not taken lightly.
But, even inside the camps, Kaleigh's fiery spirit refuses to be extinguished. In a single moment of defiance, she manages to spark a riot that ignites into a full-blown rebellion.
With growing numbers counting on her, not just for their freedom but for their very lives, two different boys vying for her heart, and trouble brewing from within the camp itself, can Kaleigh find a way to step up and become the leader everyone is counting on her to be, or will even the most carefully laid plans come crashing down around her?

  5. Biggest complaint: Quick to anger and hate, slow to compassion.
The Walking Dead actually shows how brutal humanity could be, depending on the circumstances. Awful stuff, but no doubt is happening even today, minus the zombies. :)

My book: Second on the Right
Beginning in the 21st century, events lead from the present to the past, and back again.

Eileen Reed is a young New Yorker who had always dreamed of becoming a doctor. One special trip will challenge not only her self-confidence, but change the course of her life as well. James Benedict is the CEO of a successful shipping company in England. Meeting an ancestor from his family line, he discovers his family’s secret history of piracy and his true destiny. As the stories of these two soul mates intertwine and grow together, an ageless evil arises to threaten it all. James finds his moral compass challenged as his world falls apart around him. He discovers how far he will go and what lines he will cross to keep what is rightfully his.

  6. the biggest complaint i have with the human race is that we tend to forget the lessons learned and go through a learning cycle again and again. whether it is about making wise choices, or about how to treat our neighbors, about just about remembering in general, we as a whole race keep making the same mistakes over and over. as a religious man, the scriptures are the ones that put that in perspective the most for me.

    1. I'm not a super religious person but I know if I treat everyone according to the golden rule, I'll be okay no matter what awaits me later. :) Excellent complaint, bashash!

  7. My biggest complaint right now is that we keep failing our children (as a whole) over and over in so many different ways.

I've read so many books that it's really hard to think of just one that helps me to put things in perspective. Anything that inspires me to do better, I suppose.

  8. We've lost sight of what's important: Lending a helping hand to those less fortunate, laughing every day about something, loving each other with reckless abandon. This is not a dress rehearsal, people.

    My book: Aislin of Arianrhod

An Epic Struggle in the Land of Àlainnshire...

A series of misfortunes finds Princess Aislin of Arianrhod acting as regent for her five-year old nephew after the death of her brother, King Fionn. Things go from bad to worse when Arianrhod is invaded by an army led by Prince Jariath of Morrigan, who is determined to have her as his wife, willing or unwilling.

Barely escaping him, Aislin and a trusted friend are forced to flee into Blackthorne Forest. The forest is dark, dangerous, and uncivilized. It’s also the shortest way to the Kingdom of Wyndham and the help they so desperately need.

Blackthorne Forest is also full of surprises. Caught and taken into the heart of the forest, Aislin will soon forge an alliance she never expected.

  9. My biggest complaint is the whole "Sense of Entitlement" thing ... I am not sure where people ended up thinking that they are owed things, but I keep wondering who is supposed to pay for all the stuff they are 'entitled' to... I am constantly blindsided by it, always astonished by it, and often find myself daydreaming about ways to avoid supporting it!!!

The book I have read that most illustrates my feelings is "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand. I don't have a lot of 'deep' opinions about HER opinions. I just like it that the heroine is a hard working broad who can's understand all the people around her who are either leeches or enabling them...

  10. My biggest complaint is that the human race is mostly stupid. People make dumb decisions all the time. Then, the few people that aren't idiotic have to deal with it. I get so annoyed sometimes when I have to deal with out there comments.

I've worked in the public way too much, can you tell? :)

I can't decide on just one book...honestly, so many have been such great stories with great characters that make me think "Why can't real people act that way?"

  11. Part 1: I wish more people would give independant thought a try. I wish they would read more, learn more and question more. One of the books that changed by life was Blubber by Judy Blume. The small tragedies of the crowd made clear how important it is to be oneself.

Part 2: Love From Planet Wine Cooler contains recipes for "Cocktails I Invented as a Teenage Mixology Prodigy" among other pieces of wisdom. If you need alcohol to get through the holidays, you need my book. http://www.amazon.com/Love-From-Planet-Cooler-ebook/dp/B0073V05UO/

  12. Everyone is in too much of a hurry I would say is the biggest problem.

What put it all in perspective for me is book called "Dove" by Robin Graham. He circumnavigated the entire globe by himself, well most of the way. I found it interesting that he didn't have the boat tied up to the dock in LA for six hours before it was broken into and robbed. Now considering I read this book in 10th grade which was quite a few years ago now (can it really be 30+ years?)it had quite an effect on me. His book was part of what was on my mind when I wrote The Sea Witch earlier this year.

  13. ntrusive Memory is the true story of how I overcame sadistic child abuse and a severely disabling case of PTSD to realize my dream of becoming a physician. This book is not for the fainthearted. Intrusive Memory begins in the coldly sterile mental hospital where I spent much of my childhood after being removed from my home by Child Protective Services, then whirls the reader through a cascade of pathological environments, including a violent military school and Mississippi jails. This is the story of how I fought against the odds and against my inner demons to claw my way through college and into medical school, where I graduated in the top of my class!

  14. Part 1: I think, on top of everything else already stated above, that society today is too concerned with conformity. People are often stuck inside a bubble and are too afraid to be orginal, too conditioned to be different. This leads to hatred and alienation of those who dare to question popular opinion. If we were to stick with one ideal and not branch out and embrace other possibilities, we would be stuck in a form of limbo, never progressing forward. The book that illustrates this perfectly is The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand, wherein the main character is practically ostracized by society for his grandiose architectural visions. Eventually people came around to embrace change. This is something I wish society would be more apt to do as well.

Part 2: The following is a brief synopsis for my science fiction novel, Enigma Black, published on Amazon.com. a link has also been provided to the book trailer on You Tube.

When she was just seventeen, the course of Celaine Stevens' life was permanently altered with the murders of her father, mother, and brother in one of a series of mysterious and violent explosions occurring across the country. Struggling with picking up the pieces, she's haunted by the memory of that day and her promise of retribution against those responsible for her misery. But just as she seems to be getting her life back on track, an encounter with a mysterious stranger promises her the vengeance she desires, ultimately turning the former target into the assassin.

However, as she soon learns, all choices come with consequences. And the consequence of her choice threatens to destroy the very fabric of her being.
