2015 in Review - 2016 Blogging Goals and Schedule

Well, happy Tuesday, everyone! If you've been a long time follower of the blog, you'll know I do a recap and goals post in January every year. Basically, I look over the last 12 months, decide what's working and what's not, and make goals for myself for the upcoming months.

2015 was a doozy! Here's what I accomplished this year:
  • I published 245 posts on this blog - each blog post was an average of 300 words, for a count of over 70k.
  • I held one massive event (12 Days of RR) and it was bigger than last year.
  • I launched A Daily Cup of Jo to make my interviews more awesome.
  • UtopYA (now Utopia) was attended in June.
  • I took a position as the Utopia official blogger coordinator.
  • I re-organized the blog for ease of navigation by my visitors.
  • I reviewed 16 books for the 2015 Review Team (missed my goal of 20+).
  • I wrote four novels - Markaza, M, Emancipation, and 7 - for a total word count of over 200k words.
  • I published two writing books in a new series for kids.
  • I typeset fourteen novels.
  • I edited over 400k words.
  • I proofread over 200k words.
  • I have 58 new subscribers to this blog, and about 10 on Tumblr.
Here were my goals for 2015 (taken from last year's look back):
  • Publish three novels and another anthology with the ladies of Fractured Glass.
  • Attend UtopYA Con again in June.
  • Publish a blog post every day (M-F) unless I let you all know otherwise.
  • Write one book review per week (which should get me very close to 52).
  • Keep up with my author interviews and make them bigger, badder, and more awesome.
  • Find a way to launch my 12 Days of Review Requests event to the next level.
  • Follow my schedule for posting to various social media sites and blogging to the Nth degree.
  • Get the Review Team's posts into the hands of more readers.
In green are the ones I accomplished. Orange indicates something I did most of. Red is what I totally failed at. Totally. There is no in between place there.

So, here are my goals for 2016:
  • Publish three novels and another anthology with the ladies of Fractured Glass and 7.
  • Bring Emancipation into the world kicking and screaming.
  • Do more to share promotion with other authors (back of book excerpts, etc...) on every book I publish.
  • Write at least 20 book reviews.
  • Cut off my client list at IBGW with the ones I work with now. It's getting overwhelming.
  • Do more with A Daily Cup of Jo - see new schedule below.
  • Hold an online workshop for authors - details to come.
There you have it. I don't reach far, and I keep my goals reachable. One of them is already done: Cut off my client list at IBGW. This will give me time to do a better job for the clients I already have and give me more time to write and focus on things I need to do.

Here's the new blog posting schedule, so you know what's coming:
  • MONDAYS: I'll share news I find on Facebook and Twitter. Could be writing articles, new release information, or information about something going on in the writing world. You never know!
  • TUESDAYS: Author Spotlights for NEW Indies.
  • WEDNESDAYS: This is my day for writing. There will be no Wednesday posts unless it's about a new release, or cover reveal, or something else like that.
  • THURSDAYS: Blogger OR Reviewer spotlight. I'll be bringing you information on bloggers and reviewers that help Indie authors.
  • FRIDAYS: Whatever Jo wants. You may get a post, and you may not get a post. Again, it'll be whatever. If I write a review for a book, this is the day it'll show up.
  • SATURDAYS: Daily Cup of Jo shows for the week will be highlighted.
  • SUNDAYS: Nada. This is my day off all the things.
This will start next week. We'll see how it goes. As you all know, if it's not working, I'll change it.

Did you do a look back for the year and set goals for the next? What are they? Share!

Well, that's all for today, folks! Until next time, WRITE ON!

2016 Review Team

Because of popular demand, I'm bringing back the Time for Books Review Team!

Welcome to 2016, everyone :)

Last year, I signed up as HUNGRY, and I didn't make it. BOOOOOO!!! I only got to 16. This year, I'm signing up with the same commitment, but under the new level of EARLY BIRD.

Want to join the fun?

Here are the instructions:
  1. Choose your level of commitment.
  2. Grab the image below.
  3. Create a post on your blog about joining and why you did it.
  4. Add your name and the link to your post (not the main URL of your blog) to the linky thing on this page.
  5. Get to reading!
  6. Write your reviews.
  7. Link up your reviews here.

Last year, there were 540 book reviews written and linked up. You can check them out here.

Why should you join? I also curate a review magazine on Flipboard with over 2,000 regular readers, and has enjoyed over 87,000 shares of articles I include. Your review will go in there.

It's my way of helping you get more traffic to your blog and more eyes on the reviews you write.

Happy 2016! I look forward to reading with you!

Be sure and come back around tomorrow to check out my post on the changes that'll take place for 2016.

Well, that's all for today, folks! Until next time, WRITE READ ON!

Writing Prompts Series Takes Off and Gets New Addition

Happy Tuesday, everyone! As of tomorrow, this blog will go silent nights until after the holidays. But we'll be kicking it up in the new year as I look over the last 12 months, make some changes, and see what the next 12 months will bring. But today, in celebration of all the things writing, I'd like to throw out a thank you to everyone who purchased Writing for Kids Volume One and tell you a little about the books in the series.

Ready? Let's go!

So, last week, in the midst of all the fun happening here on the blog, something awesome occurred over on Amazon. Writing Prompts for Kids hit #1 New Release status.

Here are the details for that book:

Title: Writing Prompts for Kids: 24 Writing Prompts to Spark Ideas for a Year - A Child's Writing Journal (Writing for Kids Volume I)
Author: Jo Michaels
Genre: Juvenile Non-Fiction / Language Arts / Writing and Composition
Buy Link: Amazon Paperback $19.99

Blurb:
If your child wants to write, but needs a little help (or just wants something to write IN), this book is the answer.

With 24 solid writing prompts and a guided setup, your little one will be pumping out words before you know it. From author Jo Michaels comes a fun and interactive journal style book that will spark your child’s imagination and get them creating amazing things in no time.

Your child will be asked questions like:
What is my character’s name?
How old?
Is he/she human?
If no, what is he/she?
What is he or she going to try to do?
What are Mom and Dad’s names?
Where do they live?

Prompt #1:
Think of a time you were scared. What were you scared of? How could you be braver? What power would you like to have to help?

With pages for drawing book covers and scenes, this journal will keep your child engaged for hours.

Sending out a HUGE thank you to everyone who purchased a copy!

Now, there's a new addition to the series:

Title: Writing Prompts for Teens: 12 Writing Prompts to Spark Ideas for a Year - A Teen Writing Journal (Writing for Kids Volume II)
Author: Jo Michaels
Genre: Juvenile Non-Fiction / Language Arts / Writing and Composition
Buy Link: Amazon Paperback $19.99

Blurb:
If you're a teen (or if you have one), you know there aren't many books out there that will guide you in the craft of writing.

This isn't one of those books you have to read 45 pages of before you get to the good stuff. I set out to create something that will help you become a better writer while giving you space to keep your stories together.

You start with a journal type exercise that's geared toward giving you emotions to draw from as you craft your tales. Then, we move on to creating your characters and diving into the prompts.I gave you one a month. Prompts range from romance to dystopian, so there's something for every writing style.

I didn't include anything for poetry, but you're free to do what you wish. This book is yours, after all. There's no focus on spelling or punctuation. This is a book to guide you creatively. Period.

There are no world-building exercises. I focused on character-driven stories because I believe your worlds can grow from there.

Have fun with it. Write. Be creative and grow.

And, here's a look at the full wrap:

I created this one because my own daughter is on the cusp of the age group between the first book and the second (I also have teen sons I think will get some use out of it).

Yes, it's still me being a little selfish. I want them to write AND I want that dang keepsake. They grow up so fast. I need something to look at when they're older (and maybe to show their own kids).

So, there you have it. I hope your teens get some enjoyment out of this awesome little book. There are exercises to pull out emotive phrases, and a full-on section of questions to guide them in their writing endeavors.

What do you think? Would you carry it around?

Well, that's all for today, folks! Until next time, WRITE ON!

12 Days of Review Requests 2015 - Final List of Winners and Books Pitched

You guys. Seriously. I'm exhausted but so thrilled at the turnout from this event. Not only did I have a ton of awesome samples to read and books bought, but I also saw the friendships being made in the comments. Everyone chatting it up, wishing one another luck, and thanking the amazing authors that donated to the event makes my heart full. THAT is what makes this event what it is. Stay in touch with one another, please.

Here's the way the end goes:
I'm going to list all the winners from the books pitched this year first (including the last one). That will be added to my TBR for 2016. Then, you'll see the books that won last year (and the links to the reviews I managed to write). After that, I'll announce the winner of the grand prize giveaway that ran over the duration of the event and the daily giveaway that ran over the weekend. At the bottom, you'll get the final list of all the amazing books pitched this year.

I really wanted to buy and read them all, but I promised myself I would stick to twelve, and that's what I did.

Please note: Winners from last year's event will be read before I start on the ones from this year. If your book won last year and isn't on this list, I wasn't able to finish it. While your sample intrigued me, something about the book made me stop reading. If you'd like to know what it was, feel free to send me a message.

Comment moderation will be turned back on tomorrow morning.

Ready? Let's get going!

There are SO many awesome books up there. I did end up throwing the final list in a hat and choosing one at random. I urge you to check them out and grab something new to read over the holidays. Just because I didn't choose it, doesn't mean one of the many readers and reviews I invited to attend the event didn't pick it up.

To all the authors who pitched: Thank you for introducing me to your work. I wish I could buy, read, and review them all.

To all the readers who lurked and snagged books this go round: Thank you for coming to the event! It wouldn't be worth it if it weren't for all of you. Thank you for entering the giveaways and supporting Indie authors everywhere with your reviews.

I'm taking time off after tomorrow's post. My sons are here for the holidays, and I have a book I need to finish writing. Plus, it's time to re-evaluate my goals and set new ones for 2016. There will probably be changes coming!

Thank you all so much for the support you give my little corner of the blogosphere. I hope my blog has helped you in some way.

Well, that's all for today, folks! Until next time, WRITE ON!

Congratulations to A.B. Funkhauser! Your book has been tweeted, shared on Pinterest, added to my added to my Goodreads TBR for the event, and shared on Facebook.

PITCH your book in the comments. Put your LINK in the Rafflecopter entry form. Tell me why you think I'll like it, why I should check it out, and a little about the story. DO NOT give me a synopsis. I can get that from Amazon. Make it personal or make it funny. I care not. I'll be grabbing a sample of every book pitched and go from there.

IF YOU'RE NOT IN THE LIST ABOVE, YOU DID SOMETHING WRONG. Either you didn't pitch your book in the comments, or you left the link out of the Rafflecopter. BOTH must be done for you to appear in the list. WHY? Because this is also about meeting and getting to know other authors, NOT just about getting a review or purchase for your book.

There's your friendly PSA for today :)

Please specify if you're entering as an author, a reader, or both. Author only entries will be removed before a winner is chosen.

IF you have a pre-order, please upload a SAMPLE to Google Drive and give people with the link permission to view. Put that link in the Rafflecopter form.

I strongly encourage you to check out the works of your fellow Indie authors. Chat in the comments, talk each other up, make friends!

Book reviewers! You're welcome to play along, too! Meet and greet authors. Get new books to read and review. It only works if we all work together.

**Kindly remember, there's no guarantee your book will be reviewed by me. You will get a purchase if your sample interests me, and I'll try my best to read it. But if I find I can't give it more than 2 stars, I won't write the review. I've had a few I couldn't finish and it led to me not giving a review.**

Now it's time to announce the winners from yesterday's giveaway!

Today, we have a prize pack from Suzanna Lynn and yours truly! Be sure to thank Suzanna for her donation to this event!

EBook Theft - 5 Easy Steps to Help Nail Your Pirate

I'd say happy Friday, but this issue is a serious one, and I need you all to pay attention. I need you all to protect your work. I'm gonna give you some background as to why I'm writing this, then we'll get into how to put it into action.

Twice over the last three days (yes, TWICE), I've seen authors who either have had a book up on a pirate site before release date, or had their manuscript published by someone else using the author's name before release date on one site or another.

Just... NO.

This angers me in more ways than I can count. That author, who spent God only knows how many hours and dollars to produce a book, was ripped off.

But here's the best worst part:
Those authors had only sent the book to their ARC reviewers and/or beta readers. People believed to be trustworthy.

As an author, you don't know who to trust. Let's just be honest about it. I like to believe in the good in people, but that shouldn't stop any of us from covering our own butts.

But there are a couple of ways to cover your butt and find out who's stealing your work.

Best part about this: DO NOT TELL THEM WHAT YOU'VE DONE. When they pirate your work, you'll know exactly who to go after.

Here are two methods:
#1: ONLY send out PDFs, and password protect them with the reviewer/beta-readers' names.
  1. Open in Adobe.
  2. Click on options.
  3. Choose to password protect.
  4. Save.

#1 is the easiest option, but also the least secure. There are ways around that password.

#2: Change certain lines in your manuscript. Create an Excel spreadsheet with the line you changed and the reviewer/beta-reader's name.
  1. Open your MS.
  2. Choose a random line.
  3. Change the wording, delete the sentence, or move it to a different part of the paragraph.
  4. Make the note in Excel.
  5. Save the manuscript with a number: _1, _2, _3... you get the idea (so you can keep up with which one goes out to whom).

If you find the book on a pirate site or seller site, go download it.

Even if they remove the _number, you can do a quick check to see which line was changed.

#2 is my favorite option, because they won't know what you did unless you tell them.

I do hope every author reads this, implements it, and shares the post.

I also hope every slimy scumbag book pirate out there is cringing in FEAR. You WILL be found. Authors WILL prosecute you. And you won't even know what hit you.

May you be infested with a billion superpowered fleas on your body and your arms be too short to reach your butt.

AUTHORS: If you need help password protecting your manuscript (if you use option 1) contact me, and I'll help you.

This has GOT to stop.

Until next time,

Jo
